Keystage

The National Curriculum determines the content of our planning and sets attainment targets (goals) for pupils' learning. At iCAN, we base our Year 1 and Year 2 teaching programmes around the framework and guidelines of Key Stage 1, the curriculum designed for children of 5-7 years. The focus of the curriculum is to ensure that pupils develop the essential literacy and numeracy skills they need to learn; to provide them with a guaranteed, full and rounded entitlement to learning; to foster their creativity and to inspire in pupils a joy and commitment to learning that will last a lifetime. Our curriculum for Year 1 and Year 2 builds on the skills and concepts children have learned in the Early Years Foundation Stage and aims to reinforce children's previous learning, making sure they are fully prepared to move forward.

The programmes of study in the National Curriculum set out what children should be taught in each subject and provide the basis for our planning. Literacy and Mathematics are generally taught as discrete subjects on a daily basis, but classes also study 'topics' which allow a cross-curricular approach to planning and teaching. Class topics are based on a scientific, historical or geographical theme and usually last for a teaching block.

A list of the subjects taught in Key Stage One can be found in the earlier general information under the heading 'The Curriculum'. The table below gives details of the main content areas of the Literacy, Mathematics and Science curriculum at Key Stage One.
